As a freelance designer in the fashion industry, every day presents unique challenges. But lately, nothing has impacted my workflow quite like the recent wave of US tariffs. It's unprecedented, and to say it's caused some disruption would be an understatement.
In just a few short weeks, I've witnessed the ripple effects firsthand across multiple clients and projects. Here's how the tariffs have directly influenced three clients I regularly work with:
1. Manufacturing & Fabric Sourcing Concerns
One immediate fallout has been the increased scrutiny around manufacturing locations and fabric suppliers. Clients are increasingly wary about where their fabrics and finished products originate. I've faced numerous queries about how my other clients are adapting - questions I hadn't anticipated. It’s clear that companies are anxious, seeking safer sourcing strategies, and hedging against future disruptions.
2. Strategy Overhaul: Rethinking a Client’s Direction
Another client faced tougher circumstances, necessitating a complete strategic pivot. A project initially geared toward an aggressive launch this year now demands recalibration. We've revisited not only our timeline but also our entire sourcing approach, reshaping our strategy from the ground up. It’s a reminder of how swiftly external factors can force a creative rethink.
3. Delayed Pipeline: Projects Postponed to 2026/2027
Perhaps the most dramatic effect has been the postponement of previously confirmed projects. Ambitious product lines that were ready to move forward are now indefinitely delayed, with timelines pushed back as far as 2026 or even 2027. For me, it’s particularly striking - as someone relatively new to the industry, I never imagined I'd see such lengthy delays caused by trade policy.
Despite all this, there's a silver lining: resilience. While it's challenging moment, it's also quite educational. Industry veterans and newcomers alike are scrambling, learning together how to weather this storm. It’s a wild time indeed - but as I've quickly learned, adaptability is everything.
In fashion, we innovate, we pivot, and above all, we move.
Stay agile.
